With the ever-so-versatile chain stitch, learn how to make this stunning ombre look crochet necklace! If you’ve always wanted to learn how to crochet, follow our series of Crochet Fundamentals. This tutorial uses U.S. crochet terminology, with the Australian and U.K. term in brackets. Stitches include chain (ch)[ch] and single crochet (sc)[dc].
Supplies
- Yarn (I use cotton yarn in various shades)
- Crochet hook (I use a 4 mm hook)
- A pair of scissors
- A darning needle

1. Crochet the Chains
Step 1
Using the white yarn, start with a slip knot on your hook.
Step 2
Chain 100. Cut the yarn and pull through the last loop on your hook.
Step 3
Make another one using the same colour; chain 100.
Step 4
With peach, chain 120. Cut the yarn and pull through the loop on your hook. Make two identical chains.
Step 5
With brown, chain 140. Cut the yarn and pull through the loop on your hook. Make two identical chains.
Step 6
With dark brown, chain 160. Cut the yarn and pull through the loop on your hook. Make two identical chains.
If you combine the chains, it should now look something like this.
Step 7
Join each chain by tying a knot. Cut off the yarn ends.
2. Crochet the Fastening
Step 1
With the brown yarn, chain 11.
Step 2
Work 1sc[dc] into each chain. You now have ten single crochet[dc] stitches. Work 1sc[dc] into each stitch back and forth for six rows. Cut the yarn but leave a long tail; we're going to use it to sew the piece together.
Step 3
Place the chains on the fastening piece, and using your darning needle, sew it together, covering the knots.
Step 4
Sew in the ends.
